Heat capacity is defined by the following equation:

Where:
is the object's heat capacity (J/K);
is heat energy of the object (J);
is change in the object's temperature (K);

Rearranging this equation into a more typically useful form we have the heat transfer rate for a given mass flowrate:

is the rate of heat energy transferred in the fluid (J/s or W);
is the mass flowrate of the fluid (kg/s);
is the specific heat capacity of the fluid (J/kg.K);
is the change in the fluid's temperature (K);
